The Story
I stayed in Mengsong, a village of 310 people, with Mr. Yü. He’s a tea farmer; the hillside is his — gardens below, tea forest above. For him it isn’t work but love: he spends his free time drinking tea, usually with his brother.
I talked about tea for six hours before we even set off for his forest.
Out there he crouched down, scooped a handful of soil from the base of a bush and held it out. I had to taste it. That’s how he explains what makes the tea what it is — and it works. I brought some home, so you can taste it too.
At Hekai the mist never quite lifted. The trees grow freely, no rows, only paths, and the air is clean.
